Understanding Concealed Carry in Iowa
While Iowa does allow gun owners to open carry in most situations, those who wish to conceal carry in the state must pursue a permit. Residents are eligible for a Nonprofessional Permit to Carry Weapons, provided they meet the following criteria:
They are over the age of 21.
They can pass a background check.
They have certification in weapons safety.
This permit lasts for five years and is renewable. In some cases, nonresidents and those under 21 may apply for a professional permit to carry, but that reason must be employment-related.

Iowa law describes multiple “weapon-free” zones that prohibit the carrying of concealed weapons. These primarily include areas around elementary schools and public parks not designated explicitly for hunting. Additionally, anyone under the influence of alcohol or who commits a crime while carrying a weapon may be in additional legal jeopardy even if they have a valid permit.
However, Iowa law respects gun rights, and exceptions and defenses are available. If your rights and freedom are under threat, you deserve every chance to defend yourself.
